| "Humankind can only bear so much reality." - T.S. Eliot
I like to inject a sense of the surreal into everything I do, as well as a sense of humor. But I don't think humorous art has to be lightweight. Sometimes a laugh can make the viewer more receptive to whatever more serious message you're trying to convey. I find animals to be both inherently hilarious and infinitely mysterious, so they appear in my work quite frequently. I never get tired of drawing cats and dogs, because each one has such a distinct personality, but I've also drawn penguins, frogs, bears, sea cucumbers, anteaters, sloths, skunks...well you get the idea. I also love drawing and painting creatures from my imagination. They are usually benign but unusual little homunculi with oddly human expressions, behaviors, and modes of dress. And speaking of humans: I enjoy portraying these, the most truly bizarre of all creatures in silly, odd or unexpected ways, so as to highlight their weirdness, and to promote my personal belief that the human race could stand to take itself a great deal less seriously. My recent and current projects include illustrations for "Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah: The Ceremony, the Party, and How the Day Came to Be" published by Clarion Books (a division of Houghton Mifflin), illustrations for a graphic novel somewhat in the same vein as "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel, and WORKING: A Graphic Adaptation, Harvey Pekar's (of American Splendor fame) comics adaptation of Studs Terkel's classic, published by The New Press. I'm also a contributing editor for an upcoming anthology of comics about feminism entitled "The Big Feminist BUT" (http://bigfeministbut.blogspot.com/) |
