| Gary grew up in Chicago.
While Gary loves the diversity of the big city, it was a visit to New Mexico in his 20's that had him longing for a future out west. After getting a degree at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Gary moved to Arizona. He lived there for 19 years, working as a freelance illustrator in advertising and publishing. Gary has tried many styles, yet he enjoys the more silly, wacky styles that are prominent in his children's work. After giving a copy of one of his books to a friend's 8-year-old daughter, she surprised him with a hand-drawn thank-you note that included the statement, "I like the way you draw stuff." In addition to illustrating for children, Gary creates maps and drawings for golf resorts and upscale developments. He also designs skateboards, waveboards, snowboards, boogieboards, surfboards, as well as still drawing storyboards. He works out of his home studio back on the north side of Chicago. |
