All systems green!

Dan Nelson

Just finished updating my website ( www.dnelsonart.com).  There are new PDFs in the PDF section. One of them contains the artworks I entered in APW Gallery's Sketch it Out! exhhibition.

I've had several extremely creative ideas the past few days.  One involves a strange combination of Back to the Future and Battlestar Galactica. That drawing is coming along quite well. When finished, it'll be coloured via computer.

I've also started sketching out a robotic hand. It is unusual in that it must be dexterous and agile enough to be able to hold a pencil, marker, or paintbrush. I would think that if it were made primarily of carbon fibre, like a  Formula 1 car, it would be both strong and lightweight. There would also be more a sense of functional design, rather than just pure functionality.

Reviving old typefaces

Florin Florea

I have a new personal project of reviving some of the old Archaic Romanian typefaces.

I have found some old books (around 1930, I think) that uses these kind of letters.

Chad Grohman

I like the idea of the blog as testing ground.  It lets me put out ideas without confusing the harmony of my portfolio site, such that it is.  All ideas are worth exploring.  Even getting bad ideas out will clear the way for the good ones.  When Craig Frazier was explaining his sketch process, he talked about putting everything down, no matter what or how bad the idea might seem.  Here, these stray ideas could flow into something cohesive.  If I don't put them out there, how will I ever know?

Pot of Clouds

Chad Grohman

I kept the bottom fairly blank for type.  The teapot pattern was done in several different ways of Chinese cloud motifs, however, this looked and felt the most natural way to express the girl and the mood.  There were also a couple landscapes at the bottom that made it look too artificial.  With options tried, this version works best.
